Lobby group Shipping Australia has announced its support to DP World Australia’s application to the Fair Work Commission to terminate industrial action at terminals across the country on the grounds that the action threatens to cause significant damage to the Australian economy and to New South Wales. Strikes have been ongoing at the Patrick, Hutchison and DP World terminals at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne over the past week. Port Botany is the latest place to go on strike.

The CBIC has launched a new process that eliminates the need for trade to approach personally, customs officials for clearance of cargo. The new initiative is yet another step taken by CBIC for fulfilling its commitment to a Faceless, Paperless, and Contactless Customs under the umbrella of its "Turant Customs" programme. With immediate effect, for empty container pick-up from Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao, Xiamen, Shanghai, Yantian, Shekou and Hongkong ports, containers will be released within 10 days prior to vessel’s estimated time of arrival (ETA). For empty container pick-up from Ningbo ports, containers will be released within 7 days prior to vessel’s estimated time of arrival (ETA).

The operational performance at Felixstowe has been very challenging for some time, but over the last 24 hours the issues have escalated to a level that could be disastrous for our members’ businesses, which have already been hard hit by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Freight forwarders that are now unable to restitute empty containers to the port of Felixstowe until September 23rd say it is yet another example of appalling service from a port that describes itself as ‘The Port of Britain’.

Electricity at Laem Chabang Terminal will temporarily be disconnected on September 27, 2020 from 12 pm to 6 pm (GMT+7). Affected terminals are Terminal C1C2 and Terminal D. In Terminal C1C2, all vessel operations will be ceased, return of outbound reefer containers will not be accepted and general containers is allowed for delivery and pick up as usual. Whereas, in Terminal D, all vessel operations and gate activities will be ceased and all containers are not allowed to be delivered or picked up.

All the major carriers are experiencing equipment shortages at Asian ports with popular 40ft high cubes in particular short supply at Chinese depots. Anecdotal reports to The Loadstar suggest CMA CGM currently has a shortage of equipment at all of the main Chinese ports, while other carriers are advising of shortages at some docks and near normal availability at others.

The new rules are based on the provision made in the Customs Act through an amendment made this February. The rules have been framed to curb the practice of claiming concessional customs duty by routing non-originating exports to India through preferential trade countries.

The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has sought support from the government to execute new orders amid exporters facing liquidity challenges due to the stoppage of export benefits of over Rs. 10,000 crore under a key scheme along with refunds of the integrated goods and services tax (IGST). The Merchandise Export from India Scheme (MEIS) would be wound up by December 31, 2020 and the government has already capped the benefits under it to Rs. 2 crore per exporter from September 1st – 31st December 2020.
