A labour shortage resulting from migrant labourers going back to their home states in May has adversely affected exports through the JNPT. Exports from JNPT had increased to 67% by April-end. However, the exports via the port went down again as 70% of contracted labour force went back to their home towns. This is impacting the operations both at the factories and at the port.

An incentive policy framed by the Kerala government on June 4 diverting container cargo from road to water has brought forth a rift between the IAS lobby and the Kerala Maritime Board. The policy was introduced to promote coastal shipping in the State. Containers shipped between the ICTT at Vallarpadam in Cochin Port Trust and non-major ports such as Kollam, Beypore and Azhikkal will be entitled to an incentive of 10 per cent over the road transportation costs. This will be according to the base rate set by the NATPAC in 2018.

All stakeholders, however, will have to adhere to safety guidelines laid down by the government to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Additional border trade activities with Bangladesh through land customs stations are permitted from June 8.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued a notification imposing an anti-dumping duty of Indian ceramic products which comes into force. The Dubai Customs has also issued similar notification and other gulf countries are expected to follow the suit.

PTI Exports to Bangladesh are set to resume via West Bengal's Malda district after traders agreed to create a pool of drivers, who would work in batches to deliver consignments. A pool of 50 local truck drivers will be allowed to go up to Panama parking lot in Bangladesh to unload goods and will return to stay in an isolation centre.

The export of Indian goods to Bangladesh via the Mahadipur border in Malda district started after a gap of over 70 days. The trade came to a halt at the border, along with some other land ports of Bengal, on March 24. The nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 was announced on that day.

Sources estimate that at least 6,500 trucks are stranded across six different land ports of West Bengal. International trade is on via rail.
