India’s Customs officers at Mumbai and Chennai have begun scrutinising cargo containers originating from China to verify large “under-valuation” of products. Stakeholders in India’s export-import (EXIM) logistics chain have been grappling with an “internal, oral instruction” from the Customs to all custodians of cargo to maintain all containers which have originated from China till they’re re-examined and cleared by the Customs.

The Shipping Ministry has said it has “no control or supervision” over privately-run container freight stations (CFS) located outside the limits of major port trusts. It has also stated that the rates for services rendered by the CFSs are a private arrangement between the CFS and its customers. And, it was not privy to the terms of the private contract executed by CFS and is also not the regulator of the rates charged by CFSs.

The FIEO said it is against a blanket ban on Chinese imports. They are terming it infeasible as India imports many strategic items from its neighbour. They’ve expressed fear of retaliatory action by China if goods of Chinese origin face additional inspection at Indian ports. The FIEO said that knee-jerk reactions will not help and the country can reduce the dependence on Chinese imports by developing an ecosystem for manufacturing.

India allowed Nepali cargo trucks to proceed to the Panitanki border point in West Bengal after being stranded on the bridge over the Mechi River for six days. According to the Mechi Customs Office, six trucks carrying tea and four trucks carrying large cardamom crossed the border on Tuesday. Six trucks laden with tea and five trucks laden with large cardamom rolled across the border. Nine trucks carrying broom grass bound for Haryana, India also crossed the border.

Hyundai Glovis India Pvt Ltd, the Indian unit of South Korea’s Hyundai Glovis Co Ltd, has shuttered its container freight station (CFS) operations in Chennai. The success of the direct port delivery (DPD) scheme and the general decline in cargo forced the in-house logistics unit of automotive maker Hyundai Motor Co to re-work strategies. Hyundai Glovis India has surrendered its CFS licence.

The government has imposed anti-dumping duty on certain value-added steel products. This initiative has been taken to curb cheap imports and support the struggling domestic industry that’s hit hard by the pandemic. The duty will be applicable for five years from October 15 on the steel imported from China, Vietnam and Korea. The duty will be payable in the rupee.
