TOI | PPE manufacturers await announcement for export quota

In a setback for personal protective equipment (PPE) manufacturers, the result of applications for an export quota of July has still not been announced by the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT). In another development, which may cause a delay in the announcement of the result for an export quota of PPE suits for August, the date of receiving applications was extended till August 8. The reason for this said to be some technical glitches concerning the website where applications were supposed to be filed.

Hapag Lloyd informs customers inform that The Montreal Longshore Union (CUPE 375) and the Checkers Union (ILA) remain on an indefinite strike, and negotiations are ongoing. MGT and Termont Terminals will remain fully shut down during the strike. CN Rail have seen an unprecedented surge in demand on their Halifax routes in direct response to the vessel diversions, and so congestion is building at inland ramps, resulting in longer wait times, and reduced reservation (RV) availability. Hapag Lloyd informs customers that due to the continued Industrial action in the Port of Montreal, the terminal performance in the port will continue to be severely affected by the strike. This event is well beyond Hapag Lloyd AG’s control. As the situation develops, it may prove necessary to divert further vessels and they will keep you informed accordingly. Additional costs for cargo furtherance to/from the diversion ports are provided.

Safmarine informs customers of updates to their Europe to the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent network. The updated network will connect more cargo via their hub in Colombo (Sri Lanka), allowing an option of consolidation from different origins and better connection for cargo from West Central Asia. Furthermore, by linking the Middle East stronger to key hubs in Europe, the changes provide additional flexibility and agility to move cargo between different markets.

Further to the labour dispute at the Port of Montreal as well as vessel diversions, HAPAG LLOYD provides a further update. The Montreal Longshoremen’s Union (MLU) has now provided 72-hour notice for an unlimited strike which will commence at 07:00 on Monday, August 10, 2020. Labour issues involving the MLU decision to implement an unlimited strike of its operations in Montreal are events well beyond our control.

The Commerce Ministry has recommended imposition of provisional countervailing duty (CVD) on certain steel products from Indonesia to guard domestic manufacturers from subsidised imports. DGTR in its preliminary findings has recommended the duty after concluding in its probe that ''Flat Products of Stainless Steel'' have been exported to India from Indonesia at subsidised prices. The domestic industry has suffered material injury due to subsidisation of the product and therefore it is necessary to recommend imposition of provisional countervailing duty on these imports.

After the unfortunate event in Beirut, the container terminal suffered only minor damages and it has restarted its operations. Following this positive news, HAPAG LLOYD will immediately reinstate services to the Port of Beirut, Lebanon. The first vessel on our Levante Express (LEX) Service to call Beirut will be Mona Lisa (voyage 2031W), on August 14, 2020, and will also deliver import cargo from Fleur N (Voyage 2030W), that omitted Beirut call and discharged it in Damietta.

The National Seed Association of India (NSAI) has been asking the Centre to put its agencies on high alert against Chinese seeds penetrating Indian fields. Following that, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has issued an office memorandum on the matter. Stating that unsolicited seed parcels can be a threat to India’s bio-diversity, the Ministry has asked State Agriculture Departments, agriculture universities, seed associations, certification agencies, seed corporations and the ICAR to be vigilant about suspicious seed parcels.
