India annually exports 10-12 lakh tonnes of buffalo meat valued at Rs 20,000 crore. Exports have come to a standstill as most meat units ran out of existing stocks and animal markets have been shut for weeks. Meat sales and exports may pick up significantly as the curbs will slowly be lifted. The GOI is considering reviving animal markets and allowing movement of goats, sheep and buffaloes by road, especially in the UP.

As the rupee slid to a record low, sugar exports from India have gained momentum due to strong demand from Indonesia and Iran. This has increased the exporters' margins from overseas sales. India is the world's biggest producer of sugar and higher exports from here could put pressure on global prices and limit shipments from rivals such as Brazil and Thailand.

Firming prices, coupled with a decline in rupee, is seen aiding the shipments of the cereal. After almost a 40 per cent decline in shipments during the last financial year, the demand from new buyers should help the recovery in exports this year.

The tax department has allowed merchant exporters to meet their shipment obligations by June 30 for goods they were required to export from March 20th to 29th June. Under the GST law, merchant exporters are required to export goods procured domestically within 90 days from the date of issuance of tax invoice by a registered supplier.

India has banned the export of masks that fall under specific tariff code. The issue is all masks have the same HSN code. N-95 and surgical masks are required for Covid-19. The issue is now being examined. The industry says that customs authorities are not permitting the export of knitted cloth masks under the apparel and clothing accessories tariff code.

A control room set up by the DPIIT to monitor issues of trade and industry has resolved as many as 1,739 matters as on 28 April. The issues were pertaining to internal trade, manufacturing, delivery and logistics of essential commodities during the lockdown period. The matters were further addressed to the concerned state government, district and police authorities as well as other agencies to resolve supply chain issues.
