Cutting down import dependence, especially from China is on priority, followed by a focus on substitution with quality goods while improving safety compliance to gain global market share. The GOI is mulling setting up groups to draw up strategies for sectors where other countries are looking to diversify suppliers.

This is the time when Bangladesh imports basmati from India for making biryani during Ramadan. But, since trucks are not moving between the two countries, exports have completely come to a standstill. Exporters have received new orders from the Gulf and the EU in the last one week. Demand has gone up in GCC countries too, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

Pakistan’s trade with India had already fallen to zero following the suspension of trade activities between the two neighbours. The sharp reduction in cargo handling at Karachi port is likely to bring down the country’s trade volume by the end of this quarter.

Industrial goods transport, which accounts for 60 per cent of the truck cargo, has come down drastically. To add to the problem, the 2.5 lakh booking and delivery offices of transporters have not opened as yet.

MSME importers struggle to take delivery. About 250,000 containers of metal scrap are at major ports such as Mundra, Nhava Sheva and Chennai port. Scrap companies blamed the shortage of labour, lack of logistic arrangements, heavy detention charges by shipping companies and bureaucratic hurdles for not taking delivery of containers.
