Australia’s escalating tensions with Beijing have shown up its reliance on China trade and propelled a push to increase links with Asia’s other giant economy, India. New enrollments of international students from India expanded 32% in 2019 from a year earlier and it’s the fastest growing major market for Australian services. India has overtaken China as the largest source of net migration to Australia, and its diaspora is the third largest Down Under, just behind China and the U.K.

Indian jute products have nearly no markets demand at present. The domestic industry is surviving on the government orders of sacks, which is mainly governed by the Jute Packaging Material Act -1987. Without this Act, the jute industry would have ceased to exist. There is a need to transform the demand from that of government orders to market-driven orders and hence IJMA has created this integrated e-commerce platform.

The Customs Department will closely monitor the import of goods under Free Trade Agreements (FTA) from September 21 to check the misuse of duty benefits claimed at ports. Import of white goods set-top boxes, cameras, electronic goods and incense sticks will be monitored under the new Rules of Origin (ROO) verification norms.

Three webinars have been conducted under the guidance of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for orange-growers.

The Centre has asked all states to ensure that there should be no restrictions on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods during the ongoing unlocking process. In a communication to chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said there were reports that local level restrictions on movement were being imposed by various districts and states.

Kolkata Customs is likely to allocate a separate zone within the Syama Prasad Mookerjee port area to handle cargo headed for Nepal. Once operational, this zone will be the first dedicated freight/cargo handling area for Nepal inside any port area in India. It will significantly boost cargo movement and reduce handling time for consignments headed to Nepal through the port in Kolkata. The Nepal Transit and Warehousing Company Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nepal government, had sought land to set up a warehouse.

Port workers unions have urged the government to withdraw the advisories issued to the 12 state-owned major ports. They have been directed to grant exemption/remission in charges due to force majeure triggered by the pandemic stating that it would plunge them into deeper financial crisis.

Container transport to and from Chattogram port remained suspended for 12 hours as workers running articulated Lorries went on a sudden work abstention demanding appointment letters and protesting sacking of fellows from a private company. The 18 private inland container depots (ICDs) in and around the port city and the port's six berth operators have not issued appointment letters even after signing relevant agreements with the union six months ago.

Container transport to and from Chittgong port has resumed as workers of prime mover-trailers postponed their work abstention for 17 hours. They postponed their strike for 17 hours from 6pm on Saturday following request from the administration. Their demand includes receiving appointment letters, establishing a minimum wage structure, and reinstating some of their fellow workers terminated by a transport company. Shipment of export-import containers between Chittagong Port and 19 private inland container depots (ICDs) remained suspended due to the strike.
