Afghanistan has sent 39 containers with a total capacity of 76 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to India through Iran’s southeastern Chabahar port. 30 refrigerated containers and nine conventional ones (a total of 76 TEUs) were shipped from Chabahar port heading for the Indian ports of Mandra and Nhava Sheva. In 2016, Iran, India, and Afghanistan decided to jointly establish a trade route for land-locked Central Asian countries.

In a major relief to trade, the Customs department has begun giving clearance to all cargo from China. Other cargoes are also being released. Clearance to Chinese cargo by the Customs comes at a time when the intensive lockdown is to be relaxed in Chennai and neighbouring districts from July 6. Many factories, including leather and automobile, will restart production and require critical components that were imported from China.

The cross-border movement of trucks between India and Bangladesh through Changrabandha Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Cooch Behar will resume after it remained suspended for almost three months in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak. A set of advisories to carry out the task following precautionary measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19 has been issued following a meeting of all the stakeholders including truck operators, workers' unions and the ICP authorities.

The auto industry is not just struggling to recover from the pandemic impact on the domestic front, but its exports, especially to neighbouring countries, are being impacted due to foreign currency challenges, export orders drying up and border closures to Nepal and Bangladesh. Companies such as Tata Motors, Mahindra and Ashok Leyland have had their exports severely impacted over the past 3-4 months prompting them to realign strategies to the African and South American markets.

The DGTR has started the probe initiated a probe into alleged subsidised exports of aluminium wires from Malaysia, which is impacting the domestic industry. The companies, Vedanta Ltd and Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd had filed an application before the DGTR for anti-subsidy investigation on these imports originating in or exported from Malaysia. If it is established that subsidies by Malaysia are impacting the domestic industry, the DGTR would recommend the amount of countervailing duty.

The GOI assured steel makers that it will take appropriate measures to reduce the logistics cost of products that currently reaches as high as 28 per cent. Speaking at a FICCI-organised webinar on 'Supportive Logistics for Indian Iron and Steel Industry', Minister of State for Steel Faggan Singh Kulaste told the participants that high cost of logistics is also a matter of concern for the ministry. He sought suggestions from the stakeholders on how to reduce the logistics cost of raw materials and assured them that the ministry will take steps accordingly.

A depreciating rupee is set to improve India’s competitiveness in the world market and thus help boost exports of agricultural products, textiles and gems and jewellery. The rupee has depreciated 6 per cent in the first half of the ongoing calendar year to trade at 75.51 a dollar, as against 71.38 on 1st January. The rupee had slid to 76.21 on June 16 but recovered following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) intervention.

The Department of Heavy Industries (DHI) has sought feedback from auto industry groups on the initial proposal. This suggests giving incentives over five years to increase local production and procurement for export.
