In his Independence Day address, the Chennai Port Trust Chairman P Raveendran announced that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has accorded the approval to take up the project on the EPC mode.

India’s biggest channel deepening work at JNPT is heading for litigation with the team of Belgian and Dutch dredging contractors invoking arbitration to recover unpaid dues of Rs. 200 crores on the contract that was completed in February 2019. JNPT had hired a joint venture between Boskalis Smit India LLP and Jan De Nul Dredging India Pvt Ltd through a global tender in September 2017 to allow bigger parcel size ships to dock.

FREIGHTWAVES | Cargo congestion plagues Sydney Airport in Australia

The same cargo congestion issues that have paralyzed big airports in the U.S., China and Europe during the pandemic have materialized in Australia. The airport operations division of the Emirates Group warned it is experiencing delays processing import cargo at Sydney Airport because of an unplanned spike in volume from additional freighter services and passenger planes operating in cargo mode. The passenger aircraft include large shipments of medical supplies and personal protection equipment loaded in the passenger cabin to increase the carrying capacity.

MARITIME GATEWAY | BHUTAN OPENS NEW TRADE ROUTE WITH INDIA

Bhutan and India opened a new trade route on 15 July. The new trade route passes through the Indian town of Jaigaon in West Bengal and leads to Alhay near Pasakha in Bhutan. It is a temporary measure, announced by India at the behest of Bhutan. It is in recognition of the special bond that the two countries maintain, and India’s effort to support Bhutan in this tough time.

The state government of Jharkhand will export vegetable produces of the state and provide the best deal to the growers. It has decided to export the vegetable produces to Middle East countries such as Dubai, Kuwait, Oman & Saudi Arabia. As per information, two metric tonnes of vegetable are already packed and would be exported from Kolkata on 13th August.

MONTREAL GAZETTE | Port of Montreal dockworkers launch unlimited strike

Five associations representing private enterprise in Quebec jointly demanded the federal government intervene to force an end to a strike launched at the Port of Montreal. After two four-day walk-outs to protest stalled contract talks, dockworkers launched an unlimited strike. The Syndicat des débardeurs du Port de Montréal and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) were unable to reach an agreement despite talks that lasted until 1 a.m. Monday.

MARITIME GATEWAY | CHINA REDUCES TARIFFS TO ZERO ON 97% OF BANGLADESH EXPORTS

China has reduced tariffs for Bangladeshi imported products under its Preferential Tariff Program from July 1. The result means some 97 percent of all Bangladeshi products from 60 percent. China will now provide duty-free export benefits to an additional 5,161 products from Bangladesh, taking the total number of products to 8,256, including the items admissible under the agreement of the Asia Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA)

ET | India-Bhutan border trade via Bengal suspended due to lockdown in Himalayan kingdom

Trade across the India- Bhutan border through Jaigaon in West Bengal's Alipurduar district was suspended after a lockdown was imposed to curb the rise in COVID-19 cases in the Himalayan kingdom. The border gates between India's Jaigaon and Bhutan's Phuentsholing were closed after the total lockdown came into force in the neighbouring country.

Non-basmati rice exports are seen rebounding this year as the shipments have begun on a strong note registering over 52 per cent growth in the first two months of the current financial year. Strong demand from traditional buyers in Africa and likely panic buying by some countries even as the Covid-19 pandemic tightened its grip across the world during this period fuelled the rice shipments.
