The government has identified eight more sectors where India can become a supplier to the world, in addition to the existing 12 industry sectors already zeroed in. The move is part of India’s aim to become self-reliant, which means that the country will engage wherever it has a competitive edge and skills. Food processing, iron and steel, electronics, industrial machinery, furniture, auto parts, and leather and footwear, are among the12 industry sectors identified earlier with potential for import substitution and boosting exports.

A section of truckers in Tamil Nadu has resorted to a one-day strike to protest against the State government’s decision to not provide road tax relief for the lockdown period. They are also protesting against other issues such as frequent fuel price increase and collection of toll tax. However, there was no major impact on the movement of cargo. The strike was called by various associations, including Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners Federation (TNLOF); Tamil Nadu Trailers Association and supported by the All India Confederation of Goods Vehicles Owners’ Associations (AICGVOA).

In a tweet, India's fair trade regulator, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the acquisition of Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited. The proposed transaction involves the acquisition of equity shareholding along with management control of 100 per cent of the total issued and outstanding preference share capital of Krishnapatnam Port Company.

After ceding its long-held pole position in container handling to Mundra port in the first quarter of FY 21, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has announced the start of operations at its port-based special economic zone (SEZ). Mundra has been present in this area since 2003. JNPT said two units in its multi-product SEZ – OWS LLP and Krish Food Industry - have completed their first phase of operational activity and have been declared operational units by the Development Commissioner, SEEPZ, SEZ.

AMFII has filed an application to the DGTR and alleged that material injury to the domestic industry is being caused due to subsidized imports of Viscose Rayon Filament Yarn above 60 deniers from China. The applicant has requested for imposition of countervailing duty on these imports. The product resembles silk, cotton and wool in its feel and texture. It is a popular choice for making fabrics such as georgettes, crepes and chiffons. The Commerce and Industry Ministry initiated a probe into alleged low-cost imports of a certain type of yarn from China, which is impacting the domestic industry.

According to the latest commerce ministry data, India turned a net exporter of chemicals and related products for the first time in at least a decade in FY20. The data shows that with right policy interventions, India’s chemicals sector can be a sustained driver of its merchandise exports. While these are still early days to forecast a trend, the data come as a relief at a time when the country is battling the Covid-19 pandemic and the government is seeking self-sufficiency especially in pharmaceuticals.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Vikram Singh (IRTS) as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping according to an order issued by the DoPT. He will be the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping up to November 2, 2022. Vikram Singh is a 1997-batch officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). He is currently serving as Private Secretary to President Ramnath Kovind.

The squeezing of the sericulture industry's economy by COVID-19 and the climate of hostility between India and China have led to a demand for a complete ban on the import of Chinese silk. Presently, 2,200 to 2,500 tonnes of silk worth ₹750 crore to ₹800 crores is imported from China every year. During 2019-20, India produced 25,384 tonnes of raw silk, including almost 7,000 tonnes of internationally gradable bivoltine silk.

The export, of coir and coir products from India worth Rs. 2757.90 crore for the year 2019-20, registers an all-time high record, which is around Rs. 30 crores higher than that of the last year. The exports of coir pith, tufted mats, coir Geo-textiles, coir rugs and carpets, coir other sorts, coir rope and power-loom mats registered growth both in terms of quantity and value. The products like hand-loom mats, coir yarn, rubberized coir and power-loom matting showed a decline in terms of quantity and increase in terms of value.
